Under the patronage of the President of Al-Qadisiyah University, Professor Dr. Rahi Kallaf Mahdi Al-Yasiri, and under the supervision of the Dean of the College of Dentistry, Professor Dr. Ali Hassan Ali Murad, the Continuing Education Unit at the College of Dentistry held a training course entitled “Fissure Fillings: The First Shield of Prevention Against Tooth Decay – Between Scientific Evidence and Practical Application.” The course was presented by Asst. Dr. Imad Jabbar, Asst. Dr. Rania Falah, Asst. Dr. Faten Abdul Sattar, and Asst. Dr. Zahraa Rahim Abdul
The course aimed to highlight the importance of fissure sealants as a primary preventive strategy in combating tooth decay in different age groups. It also reviewed recent scientific evidence supporting the effectiveness and safety of sealants, and discussed global standards for identifying eligible cases (correct diagnosis).
The course recommended focusing on the preventive aspect as an essential part of the school or community oral health plan, applying sealants immediately upon eruption of permanent molars (especially the first molars at 6–7 years of age), and choosing the appropriate material based on the tooth’s condition: resin in a dry environment, and GIC in cases of difficult sealant.
